Large Families & Long Lives

What age do you consider old? 50, 70, 85, 100 years old?  In the time period of Genesis some that was a young age.  Take a look at the age of different people from back then (all numbers in years old):

  • Adam – 930 years old
  • Seth (Adam’s son) – 912
  • Enosh  (Seth’s son) – 950
  • Cainan (Enosh’s son) – 910
  • Mahalalel (Canian’s son) – 895
  • Jared (Mahalalel’s son) – 962
  • Enoch (Jared’s son) -  362
  • Methusela (Enoch’s son) – 969 (oldest man)
  • Lamech (Methusela’s son) – 753
  • Noah (Lamech’s son) – 950

Methusela was the oldest person who ever lived and was recorded living 969 years.  If someone today was that old think about what they would have lived to see.  First of all, if someone was only alive 909 years, today, that means they would have been born in 1100.  Let’s look at some significant events that happened since then:

  • High Middle Ages
  • Late Middle Ages
  • Renaissance
  • Age of Exploration
  • Discovery of America
  • U.S. Revolutionary War
  • Monarchies in Eurpoe
  • French Revolution
  • U.S. Civil War
  • World War I
  • Roaring 20′s
  • Great Depression
  • World War II
  • Creation of Baseball
  • Invention of Telephone
  • Invention of Television
  • Invention of Computer
  • Invention of Airplanes
  • Alive for all 44 presidents terms in the United States

I just listed a few points in history so you get the picture of how old they got in that time.

Something else interesting about the time period of Genesis is look at the ages of the men when they had kids:

  • Adam & Eve had Seth when Adam was 230 years old.
  • Seth was 190 years old when he & his wife had Enosh

I think you get the point.  They were having children when they were were over a century old.  For that to be in today’s time, that means someone would be having kids today that was born before 1909.  I’ll end it with Noah because I find him to be the most interesting.  He had Shem, Ham, and Japheth when he was 500 years old.
