How to Handle Temptation

Don’t for one minute think you will not be tempted. Jesus Himself was tempted. You can read about what happened in Luke 4:1-13. Since Jesus is our example we should do what He did.

What did Jesus do?

Jesus quoted scripture. Lets look at Luke 4:3 which reads in the Orthodox Study Bible, “and the devil said to Him, ‘if You are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread.’” By this verse Jesus was very hungry due to Him having fasted for 40 days. Nevertheless, Jesus answered in verse 4 saying, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.’”

Is That All?

No! We see in this section two very important things about the devil we need to be aware of. In verse 5, he takes Jesus upon a high mountain, and in verse 9, he brought Him to the pinnacle of the temple in Jerusalem. As you can see, the first thing we need to be aware of is that the devil has some power. If he can take Jesus places…it is a given that the devil has some power.

The other thing we need to know is that the devil knows scripture. We see that in verses 9-11 which reads, “Then he brought Him…and said unto Him, ‘if You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down from here. For it is written: “He shall give His angels charge over you, to keep you” and, “in their hands they shall bear you up, lest you dash your foot against a stone.”‘”

As you can see, the devil knows what is written, so you need to know what God’s word is so you are not deceived. Jesus answers in verse 12 by saying, “it has been said, ‘you shall not tempt the Lord your God.’” Make sure you get into God’s word so you do not get deceived.

When tempted do as Jesus did never give in and know your bible verses so you will do God’s will. Also, pray for guidance. Check out: Christ the Rock, Abundant Blessings, and Strange Commands.
